Description

The team of MVSA Architects and Architectenbureau J. van Stigt will realize the new University Library in the Amsterdam city center. In combination we will make the architectural design for the new study center annex library, on which the Stadsdeel Centrum, Bureau Monuments and Archeology, the Cultural Heritage Agency and the University of Amsterdam reached an agreement last year.

The new University Library, the Inner-city campus will become the heart and central meeting point for the Faculty of Humanities which will be arranged on and around the Binnengasthuis terrain and the Oudemanhuispoort.

Individual character and monumental value

The selection committee, made up of representatives of the Bureau Monuments and Archeology, the Cultural Heritage Agency and the University of Amsterdam, notes that the vision of MVSA Architects and Architectenbureau J. van Stigt fits the wishes of the students and the scientists the best. ‘The proposal shows a creative way of thinking with respect for the individual character and monumental value of the buildings’, according to the committee. In the coming months MVSA Architects and Architectenbureau J. van Stigt will elaborate their vision into an architectural design. The ambition is to realize a library which will give the University of Amsterdam a recognizable look in the historic inner city, by making use of the  heritage.

Space for meeting

The new University Library will get a public function in which education and research can meet and  interact. The building will give access to an open collection for the Faculty of Humanities, and a place where lectures, discussions and presentations for a broad audience can take place. In addition around 1000 study seats with high quality ICT-services will be realized.
