THE SCHOOL AND THE PLANS
The school once designed in 1931, by Public Works, is in 2010 by Hans Kuiper, supervised by André van Stigt, completely restored and internally adapted to the future to offer good education. The classic-looking school with sculptures of Hildo Krop on the outside, has a playground with large trees and stands in the green, close to the `Galilei` park in the area of `Watergraafsmeer`. After the Second World War, a Montessori primary school was located here called “The Gull”. Kindergarten and primary school at that time were completely separate, and conducted their own policies. The building on Herschel Street therefore had two entrances: number 2 was the entrance to the kindergarten and the number 4 was from the elementary school.
The discussion, of a school in an old building can still meet the requirements of today, took a long time. With the renovation of the 5e Montessori School once again it is proofed to be worth. The building has been thoroughly revitalized, with respect of the historic character of the building. Given the need to meet current safety, comfort and legal requirements, the modified ventilation and mechanical systems are replaced. Because of all this the 13 historic chimneys are used again.
In addition, the accessibility (elevator), fire protection, plumbing are updated to recent norms. For the necessary light entry, are at two locations on the square side a row of skylights placed in the roof.
The caps are thermally insulated and all the glass is replaced by insulating glass, while maintaining existing frames. In the heart of the building, a small multifunctional central area is created. Through the efficient use of space, three additional classrooms are created. During the building process a part of the classes were temporarily placed elsewhere, therefore a majority of users have experienced the process firsthand: the building process was divided into different periods, and was partially realized during the holiday periods.
A survey in 2011, for elementary schools in Amsterdam, shows the 5e Montessori as the highest scoring school. Not schools with the most facilities are popular, but schools with lots of space in the classroom and the playground.
Parents, teachers and kids are happy with their school, they are since August 2010 in a completely renovated building. A school building that meets on the current requirements and a happy place for more than 500 kids from Amsterdam.
